"Space to Create" Audio Recording Released

BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn is proud to release an audio recording of the "Space to Create" panel discussion that took place on December 1, 2012, and focused on creative use for vacant industrial and commercial space around NYC. Panelists included Gavin Kroeber, independent cultural producer; Paul Parkhill, Executive Director of Spaceworks; Paula Z. Segal, Founder & Lead Facilitator of 596 Acres; and Daniel Eizirik also of 596 Acres. The discussion will be moderated by Risa Shoup.

NOTABLE QUOTES FROM THE DISCUSSION:

I have a bit of trouble with the vocabulary surrounding this topic, and I think in a lot of ways that’s good. Something that I’d love to have going on here as a subtext is how we discuss this. What are the terms we use? How do we define these models? It’s important to think about these things intentionally.

-Risa Shoup

You have the place that you sleep, and you have the place that you go to make money, and then there’s everything else. And where civic space and art space overlap is in that everything else… and I think that there’s a real need to stop segmenting all these things.

- Paula Z. Segal on the vocabulary of space and "third spaces"

Personally, for me, the question is to try to think about how one might strain against the ways that dominant power systems are seeking to leverage your application of use of spaces. The reuse of space has become so institutionalized in a city that it can become top-down really quickly. Are there ways that policy can support the organic, rather than try to regiment the use of space?

-Gavin Kroeber
