Handling Healthcare for the End of Life: How can the medical community provide patients and their loved ones the best possible care when the condition is beyond a cure? Host Monica Sweeney, MD, covers a lot of territory with a team from New York Methodist Hospital, led by Chief of Geriatric & Palliative Medicine Louis Muddanayake, MD. Discussed are: advanced directives, living wills, & healthcare proxies; how their unit treats the whole family, not just the patient; and stories of actual patients they’ve treated. Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI) is the brainchild of an Emergency Medicine doctor at Kings County Medical Center, Dr. Robert Gore. After seeing too many young people with gunshot and knife wounds in the ER, Dr. Gore set up a program to help kids find productive and safe alternatives to violence. We meet with both a boy’s and a girl’s group as they learn life skills and discuss their long-term goals.
