Music & Movies

With its signature rack of junk and an endless arsenal of sounds, ALLOY ORCHESTRA, “the best in the world at accompanying silent films,” (Roger Ebert) returns to Celebrate Brooklyn! with the NYC premiere of its original score to He Who Gets Slapped (1924), the tragic tale of a brilliant scientist who loses his research—and his wife—to a dishonest man and winds up a down-and-out circus clown with a very peculiar act.

Over the years, Alloy has become something of a tradition at Celebrate Brooklyn! We have presented an extraordinary collection of live music/film projects—the Jazz Passengers’ Creature From the Black Lagoon(in Shocking 3D!!!), Pere Ubu’s X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes, Karsh Kale’s Enter the Dragon, Carl Davis’ The Chaplin Mutuals project,The Millennial Territory Orchestra’s Laurel and Hardy project, Marco Benevento’s House of Usher, Yo La Tengo’s Sounds of Science—and many more, so many great original scores in fact that the Village Voice once included us in its “Best Of” issue as “Best Place to Score.” (A title presumably invented just for Celebrate Brooklyn!). Among these, Alloy is the sole repeat offender: we (and you) like them so much we just keep having them back.

The local Gypsy jazz guitar wizard STEPHANE WREMBEL, a French-born, classically trained modern day Django Reinhardt who David Fricke of Rolling Stone has called “a revelation” and Josh Baron of Relix Magazine “one the greatest guitar players I’ve ever seen... and I don’t say that lightly.”
