The Feelies with Real Estate and Times New Viking

July 23, 2011 · 7:00 PM
CELEBRATE BROOKLYN! @ Prospect Park Bandshell

The influence of New Jersey’s The Feelies, “a garage band reimagined by mathematicians, a psychedelic band with no illusions, a folk-rock band hypnotized by repetition, a punk band for introverts,”(The New York Times) cannot be overstated: they represent a direct link between the Velvet Underground and just about all of current indie rock.  After a 19-year break, the band is back with a new album, Here Before, produced by Feelies’ founders Glenn Mercer and Bill Million.  Along with Mercer and Million on lead guitar and vocals, the album and reunited group features Feelies mainstays Brenda Sauter on bass and vocals, Stanley Demeski on drums, and Dave Weckerman on percussion.  With many of the original members pursuing solo careers through the long hiatus, The Feelies are back on the scene touring nationally.

Also hailing from New Jersey, Real Estate frontman Martin Courtney has been playing music with bassist Alex Bleeker and guitarist Matthew Monadanile since his highschool days. The surf-pop group, who “share tones with North Jersey indie rock titans Yo La Tengo and the Feelies, pouring those influences through warm impressions of oldies radio,” (Pitchfork) released its debut self titled album in 2009.

Based out of Columbus, Ohio, the lo-fi heroes Times New Viking reflect the influences of legendary Ohio bands like Guided by Voices, the Breeders and Pere Ubu.  The group’s fifth album, Dancer Esquired, was released in spring 2011.
