The outspoken Algerian songbird SOUAD MASSI is one of the most original and captivating voices to come out of North Africa in a generation, with a stylistic range that runs the gamut from Western folk, rock, and country to flamenco, Arab street pop, and the chaabi music of her home. She first rose to prominence in Algiers with the rock band Atakor in the late 1990s, but faced with censorship and threats she relocated to Paris, where she recorded and released her solo debut Raoui, a set of stylistically adventurous and highly personal songs. The album launched her to international fame, and she has been on a continuous journey of musical evolution ever since, touring the world and releasing four more albums including her latest critically-acclaimed release O Houria (Liberty). Souad will bring her ensemble of master musicians with her for this very special concert which coincides with the 50th anniversary of Algerian independence (declared July 5, 1962). This is the first time Souad returns to the United States since her triumphant performance in 2004.
"Souad's music stands as testament to a hope and spirit that cannot be dimmed, let alone vanquished." -New York Times
"Massi, has one of the most powerful voices of today's generation" -Asharq Al-Awsat
The evening begins with a set by the NYC-based Palestinian oud and violin wizard SIMON SHAHEEN, “one of the definitive interpreters of Arab culture in the West.”(Daily News) Shaheen is one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers, and composers of his generation. His work incorporates and reflects a legacy of Arabic music, while it forges ahead to new frontiers, embracing many different styles in the process. This unique contribution to the world of arts was recognized in 1994 when Shaheen was honored with the prestigious National Heritage Award at the White House. His new project Zafir puts all his soaring technique and melodic ingenuity on glorious display.
This concert is made possible by the generous contribution and support of Embassy of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria in the United States, and The United States-Algeria Business Council (USABC).
