(Brooklyn, NY June 9, 2023) – Earlier this week, BRIC announced the cancellation of their opening night BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! outdoor concert series due to the poor air quality index in New York City. The outdoor festival was set to kick off its summer season at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park on Wednesday, June 7 with co-headliners Taj Mahal and Corinne Bailey Rae and an opening act from the Harlem Gospel Travelers. In good faith, organizers have rescheduled the opening night show to June 12, featuring Taj Mahal and opening act Harlem Gospel Travelers with sounds by DJ Tara.
Wes Jackson, BRIC President, said:
“When we made the difficult decision to cancel our Opening Night due to the Canadian wildfires, we knew it was in the best interest of our staff and our community’s health. When the legendary Taj Mahal told us he was willing to reroute in order to play the Bandshell, we were honored and knew that we had to make it happen. We’re happy to have the opportunity to bring the vision of our 45th season kickoff back to life and welcome our friends and family down to a reimagined version of our opening night celebrations!”
The renowned Brooklyn-based arts and media institution will now commemorate its 45th anniversary with the celebration of Family Day on Saturday, June 10, officially launching the summer festival series, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!. Family Day has an incredible line-up of Brooklyn-based talent including the innovative duo Soul Science Lab and openers Olivia K and The Parkers. Additionally, BCB! has tapped L’Rain (Taja Cheek), a critically acclaimed Brooklyn-based artist, as their first ever artist curator.

As the city continues to monitor air quality and other health concerns, emergency personnel will be present on-site throughout the season.
BRIC President Wes Jackson stated, “The health of our staff and the communities we serve is the number one priority for BRIC and we couldn’t, in good conscience, risk the wellbeing of our friends and neighbors who may have high risk health issues. We’re excited to see you this Saturday for our Family Day and all summer long for the rest of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! season.”
WHO: Curated for loved ones to enjoy, BCB! is kicking off the festival season this weekend with a fun and action packed Saturday. Family Day will bring Brooklyn-based talent to the forefront including Soul Science Lab, comprised of emcee, songwriter Chen Lo and composer, producer and instrumentalist Asante Amin. They are known as multimedia artists who translate stories into soul stirring sounds and dynamic visuals. Olivia K and The Parkers, the dynamic fusion soul, jazz and gospel band, will join them on stage as the opening act.
