Youth Takeover brings together three programs for one night, Concrete Stories: BRIC’s Youth Media Festival; Emerging Creators, 34th Annual Contemporary Art Student Exhibition; The World, Reflected In Your Eyes, the 4th annual For-Teens-By-Teens exhibition

(BROOKLYN, NY – May, 3, 2023) – BRIC, a leading arts and media institution, is pleased to announce the 34th annual Contemporary Art Student Exhibition, Emerging Creators, The World, Reflected In Your Eyes, an art exhibition curated by the Youth Curatorial Fellows, and Concrete Stories: BRIC’s Youth Media Festival produced by Youth Media Fellows. Youth Takeover, a reception and media event for the exhibitions and film festival, will take place on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 5-8pm at BRIC House. The exhibitions will be on view through June 18, 2023.
EMERGING CREATORS
BRIC’s 34th annual student exhibition, Emerging Creators, celebrates the creativity of K-12 graders who are part of BRIC’s Youth Education Residency Programs, representing a network of over 800 students across 37 schools, and 12 community-based organizations located across 23 Brooklyn neighborhoods. The exhibition brings together youth voices exploring diverse topics, including community, identity, activism, and current events. Artists work across a wide range of media, including mosaic, mixed media, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, podcasting, animation, and filmmaking, to produce artworks that explore the issues and events shaping the post-pandemic world. Emerging Creators, embodies the creative courage, thoughtfulness, and resiliency of the youth. The exhibition will be on view from May 25 – June 18, 2023, in the Main Gallery.

THE WORLD, REFLECTED IN YOUR EYES
The 4th annual For-Teen-By-Teen exhibition, The World, Reflected In Your Eyes, is a curated exhibition by the 2022-2023 Youth Curatorial Fellowship. The fellows, nine New York City-based sophomores, juniors, and seniors ages 13-19, developed the concept and curated a selection of artwork across mediums submitted by New York City High School students through an open call. The World, Reflected In Your Eyes is an immersive exhibition about our realities and vision of the future. It asks the questions: What are your revolutionary ideas for the future? What problems are we trying to solve? What do you want out of this reality? The exhibition is divided into two sides that represent the opposing views showing multiple possibilities. One side is a natural blooming dreamscape, and the other is industrial steampunk. The exhibition shows the future is open to interpretation, based on the effects of the social challenges of the present. The World, Reflected In Your Eyes will be on view from May 25 – June 18, 2023, in the Project Room.

CONCRETE STORIES
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Concrete Stories: BRIC’s Youth Media Festival. Concrete Stories aims to promote conversations around the power and potential of young people by showcasing authentic, entertaining, and diverse works. The 2023 BRIC Youth Media Fellows worked diligently to organize the 10th Annual Concrete Stories: BRIC Youth Media Festival. The fellows reviewed film submissions and awarded winners in categories including directing, storytelling, cinematography, acting, editing, and viewer’s choice. The festival features the winners’ films showing a collection of short films across documentaries, drama, experimental, and animation.

What makes this day truly special, is the youth’s occupation of BRIC House through art, a labor of expression. NYC youth have synergized this organization’s re-opening with their presence, intention and voice. When BRIC Youth Fellows started meeting early last fall to produce Concrete Stories and The World, Reflected in Your Eyes, many of us were still finding our footing in the new normal, and the youth utilized this fragile moment to create. Our young people need and deserve a place to meet, exchange and plan for greatness. BRIC makes space for creators to make mistakes and accomplish more than they thought possible. This is the same growth-mindset we bring to classrooms and share with our students every day. We are proud to nurture, host and exhibit their vision because it is perfectly theirs.”
