BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!: Radical Joy

Radical is sometimes described in three ways: as growing from the root, as a fundamental principle, and as an extreme. We embrace all those definitions at BRIC, and we believe they also apply to the universal power of joy.

Radical Joy is the concentrated euphoria that comes from climbing a steep hill and reaching the peak, because the peak is where liberation begins. It’s that feeling of absolute freedom that comes when you party with your people, when you stand in solidarity and celebration beside people you’ve even never met before – because your roots reach that deep, and partying is a fundamental principle, and we travel together outside the mainstream where movement is a call to action. Then the music hits and you can’t help but move.

If joy is an expression of delight, radical joy is a different kind of gift. It has all the brilliant spectacle and sublime elation of its cousin, but it is also a choice. We choose to cross immersive streams of merry rebellion that run generations deep and keep us surging forward. We pledge to embrace a form of protection and care that uplifts all of us at the same time, neighbors and family, strangers and loved ones, as we mount that next hill in the name of the groove. Radical joy is how we build up and how we get down.
