Inspired by the vibrant hustle of dollar vans weaving through Caribbean communities in New York City, writer/director Gabriel Tolliver’s new scripted pilot Dolla Van produced by BRIC TV, takes viewers on a wild ride through the heart of Brooklyn. Officially selected for both the American Black Film Festival (2023) and Caribbean Lens International Film & Art Festival (2023), Dolla Van follows Trinidadian siblings Jordana and Khalid Bibby as they navigate the competitive world of dollar van driving along Flatbush Avenue. Jordana, the first woman driver on the route, clashes with her brother in classic sibling rivalry fashion as they pick up a diverse and eccentric group of passengers. From a gentrifying couple craving roti to a displaced military veteran and a mystical hornplayer seeking flight at the abandoned Floyd Bennett Field, Dolla Van explores the complex realities of first-generation Americans, gentrification’s impact on communities, the vibrant West Indian culture, and the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs andveterans.
