Saxophonist Travis Laplante woke up one morning with the crystal clear vision that he needed to start an all-tenor-saxophone ensemble with three other individuals: Matthew Nelson, Jeremy Viner, and Patrick Breiner. Battle Trance is the “mesmerizing” (NY Times) result. Their performances have been described as a “voyage of glorious texture, melody, and mood” (AV Club) and their debut piece Palace of Wind lives up to their pioneering reputation. Palace of Wind is a physically demanding work involving circular breathing for extended periods of time which embraces both the cerebral nature of composition and the visceral act of performance. “Made up of tiny musical motifs, and a music that throbs with tension between stillness and agitation, density and light,” (NY Times) Battle Trance’s Palace of Wind is not a performance to be missed.

This performance is also part of Handmade Abstract, an exhibition currently on view in our gallery that brings together 13 emerging and mid-career artists who are dedicated to the visual language of abstraction and whose work emphasizes the handcrafted nature of the art and processes of fabrication.
