The week-long BRIC JazzFest culminates in a two-night marathon with ensembles performing overlapping sets in multiple spaces throughout BRIC House. The evening is designed so you can move freely among performances and catch a piece of all nine artists in each night, or select a few favorites and catch their whole show. Set times subject to changeDoors open at 6:30PM with happy hour specials till 8:00PM

The second night of the marathon features:

 

Master jazz/soul organist Dr. Lonnie Smith’s Evolution “seems to be up to something bigger than music, and older, and deeper… with organ, guitar, two horns and two drummers.” (NY Times)

Players include Keyon Harrold (Trumpet), John Ellis (Sax), Kenrick Scott (Drums), Allison Miller (Drums), Alicia Olatuja (Vocals)

Drummer, bandleader, composer, and producer Nate Smith + KINFOLK is “a virtuosic force of nature”(Sydney Morning Herald)

Players include Fima Ephron (Bass), Kevin Hayes (Piano/Keyboards), Jeremy Most (Guitar), Jaleel Shaw (Sax), Amma Whatt (Vocals)

 

Trumpeter/pianist Nicholas Payton Trio is “a continuum from post-bop through vintage soul into a kind of modern fusion.” (NY Times)

Thumbscrew w/ Mary Halvorson (guitar), Michael Formanek (bass), and Tomas Fujiwara (drums) “project a marvel of creativity, complemented by stinging solos and a highly intuitive command and control gameplan that provides thrills a minute and a simmering impetus.” (All About Jazz)

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Marcus Strickland’s Twi Life is “a tenor and soprano saxophonist of post-bop assurance, (and an) outlet for the millennial soul music in which he also traverses.” (NY Times)

Players include Keyon Harrold (Trumpet), Mitch Henry (B3 organ/keyboards), Big Yuki Hirano (Keyboards), Kyle Miles (Bass), Charles Haynes (Drums), Christie Dashiell (Vocals)

 

Saxophonist and his band James Carter Organ Trio “takes the familiar sound of a Hammond B-3 ensemble… and gives the sound of the great guitarist Django Reinhardt an urban feel.” (Pittsburgh Tribune)

Michael Blake “captures the old-school tenor sax spirit.” (Jazz Times)

Drummer and composer Allison Miller‘s “craftiness as a percussionist is met by her ingenuity as a composer and group conceptualist.” (The New Yorker) She’ll be joined by her band Boom Tic Boom.

WBGO’s on-air personality and vocalist Lezlie Harrison will be DJing between sets.

Venue Information:

BRIC House is Brooklyn’s cultural living room: a 40,000 square foot multi-disciplinary arts and media complex in the former Strand Theatre, where emerging and established artists can create work that deepens their practice and engages the diverse communities of the borough.
