BRIC TV’s Emmy-nominated documentary “Stealing Home: How Deed Theft Makes Homeowners Homeless” was an instrumental tool in lobbying efforts made by Senator Zellnor Myrie in legislation regarding deed theft. According to the Attorney General’s Office, from 2014 – 2023, the NYC Sheriff’s Office counted nearly 3,500 complaints of deed theft in NYC and more than 1,500 complaints in Brooklyn. Join BRIC, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, and the Office of Senator Zellnor Myrie in this community discussion and screening. New York State strengthened homeowner protections this summer with a new deed theft law. The new law, co-authored by Attorney General James and sponsored by Senator Myrie, makes deed theft a crime and extends the statute of limitation; legal action can now be initiated within five years of the theft or two years after the homeowner discovers the crime, whichever is later. The new law also grants the Office of the Attorney General original jurisdiction to prosecute these offenses.
