Event Info

Join us for: La Sala de Lulada – the living room (la sala) of Lulada Club, New York City’s All Women Salsa Orchestra, on June 4th for an intimate conversation between Lulada Club’s co-founders Andrea Chavarro and Katherine Ocampo, and journalist, composer, author, and historian Aurora Flores.

Flores witnessed and documented the explosive rise of Nuyorican salsa in the 1970’s as well as the first all women salsa orchestra in New York City, Latin Fever, which opened for Celia Cruz.

Together, they will explore Flores’s groundbreaking journalism documenting the salsa movement of the 1970s, sharing stories from the era, reflections on the music’s cultural impact, and the women and artists who shaped the sound that transformed Latin music worldwide.

The evening will include exploring Latin Fever’s 1977 album, and discussing key historical moments in salsa’s history and the women who made it happen.

We will conclude with a short, high-energy live performance by Lulada Club themselves.

During the performance, attendees will be welcomed to dance to the music, linking the legacy of women musicians in salsa from its early years to today.
