Curated by Hawley Hussey
BRIC’s Annual Student Exhibition, curated by Hawley Hussey, showcased the work completed in BRIC’s public school residencies in which professional artist teachers were sent directly into the classroom, where they use visual art and media concepts and techniques to help students gain confidence in creative self-expression while better understanding a range of academic subjects. Art and media is created in a wide variety of media by students in grades pre-K through high school in public schools across Brooklyn as well as in Queens and the Bronx. This was the 26th year of BRIC’s presentation of this exhibition and featured work from 18 schools.
#InstaSelfieParadise centered around the theme of interaction as a “call for action.” BRIC’s residencies in public schools all engaged in a common dialogue about the beauty of nature and preserving the environment in addition to studying cultures around the world, helping students develop empathy for the world around them. The exhibition also tapped into the fluidity students have with social media today, by integrating these platforms as part of the exhibition, allowing a way to connect with others globally. #InstaSelfieParadise allowed these new methods of communication to be used in a positive way– encouraging students and visitors to interact with the art work and share their creativity, observations, and personal messages through social media communications that travel beyond the exhibition walls. #InstaSelfieParadise embraced the idea of using smartphones and hashtags to make meaning, advance understanding, and spread affirmative messages on a global level.
