The individual creates to celebrate, critique, and add vibrancy to the community; the community in turn supports the individual in developing noble feelings of service, compassion, and unity. BRIC is pleased to present INTERSECTION: Individual x Community, The 30th Annual Contemporary Art Student Exhibition, which celebrates the creative spirit of student artists from BRIC’s school-based residency programs and showcases how their individual expressions intersect with community identity.
For 30 years, BRIC has been a pioneer in providing meaningful art education to public school students throughout Brooklyn. BRIC’s Education program is distinguished by the involvement of professional contemporary artists, who bring their individual studio practices into the classroom via in-school residencies that introduce new ways of learning through innovative fine art techniques, concepts, and creative thinking. Over the past three decades, these residencies have culminated in lively, thought-provoking exhibitions presented at BRIC. These exhibitions offer students the opportunity to see their own work and that of their peers mounted in a professional gallery setting, breaking down barriers between youth and institutional art spaces.
This year’s student exhibition celebrates this significant milestone, showcasing aselection of the work created by 1,400 students from 46 residencies in 31 schools located in 16 Brooklyn neighborhoods. Using a wide variety of media—from sculpture and photography, to film and podcasts, to mosaic and mural work—this edition of the exhibition explores issues of identity, activism, community, social change, and the characteristics that shape one’s personal and communal identities.
