THE TABLE SET
ON VIEW: November 12 – 27, 2018
Nora Rodriguez’shand-drawn animation technique plays on the physical comedy of early animation to explore routines and repetitive actions in daily life. The Table Set explores the diverse labor that takes place around the kitchen table, from homework to housework to arguments. A series of characters move in and out of the space, gradually building, arranging, deconstructing, and altering the contents of the table to produce an ever-evolving “still-life.” In the process of creating the animation, Rodriguez sourced information about table activities and etiquettes from residents across Brooklyn to produce a very localized snapshot of universal notions of “home.” Rodriguez sets the kitchen table as the axis point around which self, family, and community spin. The Table Set suggests creative potential in work that is so ingrained in our daily lives that we might never consider it “art,” yet Rodriguez stresses that these creative gestures are what give our lives meaning.
