BRIC Arts | Media | Bklynis proud topresent The 25th Annual BRIC Contemporary Art Education Exhibition of student artwork. Curated by Hawley Hussey, BRIC’s Director of Contemporary Art Education, the exhibition marks 25 years of presenting artwork created in a wide variety of media by students in grades pre-K through high school in public schools across Brooklyn as well as in Queens and the Bronx. This year’s exhibition will include artistic contributions by over 1,000 students from 14 partnering public schools.
For 25 years, BRIC has presented this exhibition of student art as a culmination of the work completed in our public school residencies. Artist teachers are sent directly into public school classrooms, where they use visual art concepts and techniques to help students gain confidence in creative self-expression, as well as to better understand academic subjects. BRIC’s Contemporary Art Education residency program directly serves over 2,000 students each year and it is estimated that some25,000 students have been impacted by the program overall in its quarter century history. The 25th Annual Contemporary Art Education Exhibition will focus on highlighting the intersection between contemporary artists and the public school community. The contemporary artist residency model empowers students and teachers through expanded artistic methods and ideas that inspire creativity while reinforcing classroom learning and social skills. The innovative projects created by students under the guidance of BRIC’s artist teachers showcase the importance of a dialogue between contemporary artists and the culture and communities they impact.
Works in the show will be created in a range of different media – from painting to wall projections to site-specific installations – and will reflect such fundamental themes as foundation art basics, science and mathematics, family and community, and identity and memory.
