This September we reopened BRIC House to our Brooklyn community with two groundbreaking Contemporary Art exhibitions. In our Project Room, we showcased Sophia-Yemisi Adeyemo’s debut show Earth & Iron: Archival Visions of Land and Struggle, which grew out of her work as a BRIClab artist-in-residence.
From September 2021 to April 2022, Sophia-Yemisi and a cohort of four other visual artists took part in our residency program with access to BRIC studio spaces, mentors, and resources to grow their personal practices. Following Sophia-Yemisi’s time in residence, BRIC selected her to present her first-ever solo exhibition Earth & Iron: Archival Visions of Land and Struggle, featuring paintings and collaged images invoking archival colonial photography from West Africa and the Caribbean.
BRIClab offers year-long support to 18 artists and teams over four disciplines: Contemporary Art, Performing Arts, Video Art, and Film + TV. Other BRIClab alumni include Grammy-winner Ty Defoe, Brooklyn-based theater collective The TEAM, and Sarah E. Brook, whose work is currently on display at the Lena Horne Bandshell.
