A triple bill featuring the cream of the indie-Americana crop, spiked with whiskey and whipped to a tantalizing peak. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst a.k.a. the husband and wife duo SHOVELS & ROPE’s “first rate tunes, from raucous anthems to dark story songs,” (New Yorker) can be as loud as a truckstop full of bikers or as pretty as springtime in their Charleston, SC home. The band’s name comes from a record they made in 2008 before they were officially a band, which they note “is a pretty good record featuring several murder ballads where some characters were hanging and others were doing the burying, so the title seemed apt.” They released their proper debut, O’ Be Joyful, on Dualtone in 2012, and the forthcoming Swimmin’ Time arrives this August. They tour with their hound dog Townes.

VALERIE JUNE, “a major star in waiting,” (London Evening Standard) blends rural roots and country that crosses Alan Lomax’s acoustic field recordings with biting, electric indieblues— a style she calls organic moonshine roots music. After self-releasing three albums (The Way of the Weeping Willow, 2006; Mountain of Rose Quartz, 2008; Valerie June and the Tennessee Express, 2010), she teamed up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and producer Kevin Augunas (Edward Sharpe, Florence + The Machine) for Pushin’ Against a Stone, released on the Sunday Best Label in 2013.

SHAKEY GRAVES conjures spare, spooky folk with a guitar, a modified suitcase/kick drum, and a voice that “jumps from a whisper to a yelp.” (Austin360)
