About the Celebration
BRIC is delighted to announce its Opening Night Gala to kick off the 36th season of the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival. We hope you will join us for this dazzling event that will shine a light on the whole summer season. At the Gala, we will proudly honor Kenneth Adams, a longstanding supporter and member of the BRIC family during a sunset dinner and concert to support our free, world-class programming at the Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival.
Honoring one of BRIC and Brooklyn’s Best
Kenneth Adams, a lifelong Brooklyn resident and former member of the BRIC Board of Directors, will be honored for his dedicated support of BRIC and his exceptional career as a leader for cultural and economic growth, both statewide and here in our borough. Ken is President & CEO of Empire State Development and Commissioner of the New York State Department of Economic Development. He manages a broad range of programs, incentives and services designed to increase private sector investment and job creation in New York. Throughout his career—as President and CEO of The Business Council of New York State, President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Director of the MetroTech Business Improvement District, and founding Executive Director of New York Cares—Ken has consistently elevated Brooklyn and New York to reach higher ideals and greater achievements. It is our privilege to recognize Ken’s investment in our community and his tireless efforts on BRIC’s behalf.
Performance by Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe—the inimitable award-winning songwriter, performer, producer, CoverGirl, and avant-garde funkstress—comes to the Bandshell for a dazzling Opening Night performance. Monáe has declared herself, over the course of one EP [Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), 2007] and two critically acclaimed concept albums (The ArchAndroid, 2010 and The Electric Lady, 2013), as the most original pop voice of her generation: at once futuristic, retro, and totally of the moment. Protégé of Big Boi, signed to Bad Boy, and the founder of her own Wondaland Art Society, She is an unstoppable creative force—“a super-musical cross between James Brown, Judy Garland, André 3000 and Steve Jobs, invented to test the desperate incredulity of music journalists” (The Telegraph). Monáe’s concerts are known to have giant ambitions, earning her a reputation as one of the most entertaining acts in contemporary pop music. More info>>
